I consider myself truly lucky to have found Røde Kors Omsorgscenter Thorsgade. This is because each day that I volunteer, I am deeply moved in some way by the people who temporarily live at the center, their stories, their intelligence and their big hearts. The care center is targeted at helping socially marginalized adults who are discharged from hospitals after completion of their treatment but who are not yet healthy. These individuals are permitted to stay for two weeks at the care center. We as volunteers are there to help them reach a fuller recovery as well as help them get back on their feet by being a mentor and friend. The best part about volunteering here is really getting to know these strong and resilient people, hearing about their stories and hardships as well as hearing how they have thus far managed to overcome such obstacles. However, the hardest part about volunteering here is that two weeks is a relatively short time and when these individuals must leave, they often have no where sustainable to go. It is so difficult to be able to only help them with such a small part of their journey and it pains me not being able to offer these people more than that.
