Komplet jobbeskrivelse
Department of Biology, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a position in molecular biology for a research assistant, developing circular DNA as a biomarker in cancer.
The position is available from 15 October or as soon as possible thereafter.
Extrachromosomal DNA circles are known from tumors where they carry proto-oncogenes and can induce tumorigenesis (DOI: 10.1016/j.tig.2022.02.007). Our recent data reveal that circular DNA is also found in blood plasma as circular circulating tumor DNA (circular ctDNA), suggesting that this new type of ctDNA can be an efficient marker for cancer. We have developed a technology for detecting circular ctDNA as a biomarker in plasma, and we are now looking for a scientific assistant to optimize and validate the method for robust, reproducible use by end users in hospital settings. This includes considering how the technology can be introduced into clinical workflows and how the existing solution can be automated for routine use. The successful candidate will work with the aim of advancing the technology toward commercialization, in close collaboration with the startup company CARE-DNA, which is working on bringing this product to market.
Description of the scientific environment
You will be a member of the Regenberg research team (Regenberg Lab). We explore the biology of circular DNA in eukaryotic systems, taking advantage of our highly sensitive methods for detection and analysis of circular DNA in yeast, animals, and human cancer from whole genome data. You will work in close contact with other scientists in bioinformatics, as well as experimentalists who purify, sequence, and analyze the circular DNA in thousands of plasma and tumor samples from cancer patients. We offer an exciting international work environment in our renowned team, with ample opportunity to develop a strong scientific career and gain insight into the startup world. The project will be carried out at the Section for Ecology and Evolution, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen.
We expect the candidate to have:
- Hands on experience with common genomics methods, including whole genome sequencing (WGS)
- Experience with DNA purification and library preparation
- A strong understanding of cancer biology is an advantage
- Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work well in a team
- An agile mindset, comfortable working in a rapidly changing environment
- Structured and strategic thinking
- Well-organized, with the ability to document their work clearly
- An interest in startups/spinout ventures
- Experience from the diagnostic industry or public sector is an advantage
Supervisor is Professor, Birgitte Regenberg, Department of Biology, bregenberg@bio.ku.dk, direct phone: +4535321680.
The position is available for a 16-month period and your key task is to manage and carry on your research project.
Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc in Molecular Biology or a similar discipline, and must be familiar with working independently in the laboratory. Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
The application, in English, must be submitted electronically in the UCPH Job Portal.
Please include
- Curriculum vitae
- Diplomas (Master degree or equivalent)
- Complete publication list
